What a fun and exciting week it's been...and it's not quite over yet! The students brought home their DVDs today, and those who won't be coming to school tomorrow brought their report cards as well.
Those who *are* coming tomorrow need to remember to pack their swimming gear: we'll be leaving for Foothills Pool shortly after attendance, so they can just wear their swimsuits under their clothes, and will need to remember to pack underwear along with their towel, in a plastic bag that will keep their backpacks dry once they get out of the pool. Another thing to remember is extra snacks, as kids always seem to be ravenous after swimming!
We will return to school in time to distribute report cards (and hugs!), then have dismissal at 11:15.
Thank you all so much for your support of our learning this year...as I told the kids this morning, they have now surpassed the class of 2007 as my most remarkable and wonderful year of teaching to date. I love them, and will miss them...and I wish the very best for those going to different schools next year! Enjoy the summer, everyone.

A great day today, celebrating the performances of the kids who participated in Bel-Park's Got Talent, sharing our movie with the rest of the school, and treating our incredible student leaders with ice cream cones at the end of the day!
Tomorrow morning is our Sports Day event, kindly organized by Kids Love Bowness (our before- and after-school care program). There is an Olympic theme, so kids are invited to wear clothing/colours representing their favourite/home country. Faster, Higher, Stronger!

Happy Summer Solstice! (So odd to think that, in a year at this time, I'll be celebrating *Winter* Solstice in Australia!)
The holidays are nearly upon us, and I'll be sending a bunch of things home over the next few days...please send an extra bag, if your child's backpack doesn't have a lot of extra room.
Our iMovie assembly is tomorrow at 10:30, for any parents who wish to join us (though the DVD of our movie is one of the things that will go home with the report card on your child's last day of school).
For those who will be here until Friday: I am still missing half the swim forms! You can't go if you don't return your forms!!

Blue Monday: On Monday, we are hoping that all of BelPark will wear blue in honour of World Refugee Day.
Please remember to return your consent forms and ability level forms for swimming next week--unless your child will not be here on the last day of school, in which case I need to know in advance so I can send the report card, etc., home early.
And Happy Fathers' Day this weekend!
Dads: There is a treasure coming home in your child's backpack today.
Moms: Please accept my apologies that said treasure is, um, the same thing you received...and then some. It's way better. Like, entire orders of magnitude better. We had more time this week! Enjoy it vicariously. :)

Coming home today: a letter and consent form for the swimming trip that all the 4/5s and 5/6s will be doing on the last day of school. There is no cost, but we will need a couple volunteers that morning.
(And I'm afraid I will also need one volunteer the afternoon before, as the Grade 5s from our class have been invited--along with myself--to the year-end picnic and celebration at Bowness Park on June 23, after the farewell assembly...I'll email you all the details about these events, volunteers! The Grade 4s will spend that afternoon in the school field with all the Grade 3/4 students, participating in a big round-robin soccer tournament.)
There is also another note going home with those students who will be attending William D. Pratt school in the fall.

At long last, our half of the school is finally being painted. For the next week, we will be keeping our jackets, extra shoes, backpacks, and lunch bins inside the classroom, while the halls are finished...please ensure that your kids are not bringing more hoodies, etc., than they need on any given day. (And please remind them of the perils of touching wet paint! To be safe, you may not want to send them in any brand-new clothes right now...)

Tomorrow is Crazy Shorts/Pizza Day...even those students who ordered pizza should still bring a snack for morning recess.
Grade 5: Just when you thought you were finished with homework! Please see the Health homework, and help your child to complete the sheets. Page 1 is a review of Grade 4 material (that we went over in class today), so they can probably do that independently...Page 2 is a crossword puzzle of the vocabulary involved in the Grade 5 curriculum. (Some of those terms you may not have used yourself in several years, so feel free to take your time working through this together--I just need it back by next Monday!)

Okay, this is LAST CALL for book orders and pizza orders...Pizza Day is next Tuesday, and you are encouraged to wear your favourite "crazy" shorts that day!
Early dismissal tomorrow (11:15).
Participants in Talent Show were announced today...those kids will have a lunchtime rehearsal one day next week, to prepare for performances during the last week of school. (Congrats, kids!)

Reminder: the project exhibition is tonight, between 5:30 and 7:30, in the Learning Commons. And I'll start the movie no earlier than 6:30, with promised popcorn...wear your jammies if you insist, kiddos. I make no promises about popsicles at the end...
(Unfortunately, I am home today because my older son is sick, but I will be returning to the school at around 4:30 to make sure everything is ready to go!)
Also: pizza orders and Scholastic book orders are due tomorrow (or Friday morning at the latest!).

Please see the two notices going home about the proposed fees for next year and the *urgent* need for one more Casino volunteer for this weekend (plus backups who could fill in if needed)...please contact our wonderful Joleen (a frontrunner for BelPark's parent volunteer MVP) if you can help!

June 4 Special Message from the BelPark Admin Blog:
Calgary Bike to School Day, June 7, 2016
Calgary Bike to School Day has grown from a single school event in 2014, to a citywide event in 2015 and hopefully to an even bigger day on June 7, 2016. Last year we had over 7900 students and parents ride their bikes to school with representation from 74 schools within Calgary and three schools in surrounding communities. We are hoping to make this event bigger and better each year as we continue to promote community and healthy lifestyles.
We will also enter every student in Calgary who ride their bikes into draws for prizes! Yay, prizes!
Student Safety – any student the chooses to participate will be encouraged to follow the rules of the roads, have a properly maintained and working bike and wear a helmet. Please, always a helmet!
You can follow them on Twitter at #yycbike2school or on their webpage:http://calgarybiketoschool.weebly.com

The kids have made some fantastic progress on their models over the last couple days...we can't wait to share them with you Wednesday night! Remember to bring any Lego, tiny people, twigs for trees, pipecleaners, etc., next week. (And thanks to Joleen for agreeing to bring in her jigsaw again on Monday!)
Runners: see you at Run Bowness on Sunday! The 10k starts at 9, the 5k starts at 9:05, and the kids' mile starts at 10:15...or, you know, when the last 10k runner (quite possibly me!) finally limps across the finish line. :)

Notices coming home today: newsletter, staffing update, and the announcement that our Scholastic book fair has been canceled. However, our project exhibition will *still* occur that night (Wednesday, June 8, 5:30-7:30, in the Learning Commons). The kids will no longer be trading off and heading to the book fair, so all group members in attendance can be with their display the whole evening...until we pull out the new giant pillows and curl up for a screening of our Canadian history movie! (I may need to invest in some more popcorn, eh, kids?) The Kindergarten concert will also still take place that evening, moved to the large gym.

Today your child is bringing home an information letter about our upcoming instruction of Human Sexuality, as part of the Health and Life Skills curriculum. Attached to it is an exemption form, which you can sign and return to me if you do not want your child to be part of these lessons. If you wish your child to participate, there is no form that you need to complete. Please note that the instruction is grade-specific and age-appropriate. The Grade 4 students will be taught this curriculum by Mr. Kearney, and the Grade 5 students will stay with me for it. Lessons will take place the week of June 13-17. Please contact me with any questions or concerns. Thanks!

Please bring any extra building materials for our models early next week.
Also: the latest update from Mr. Kearney is that Bowness High is still ahead of Bel-Park on Run Bowness registrations, 32 to 24. (You can check for names on the Confirmation tab of the website.) He's hoping for a last-minute victory! So if you've been on the fence about participating on June 5, but now think that you'd like to come out and join us on race day, please do...it's lots of fun! You can register for the event here.

An amazing (and exhausting!) day at the park today...kudos to those of you who still had gas left in the tank for the Family Dance this evening! I'll post some photos soon. In the meantime, here is a link to something else that will get your kids out trying some new activities: All Sport One Day. On June 18, there will be over 50 different *free* introductory sports lessons offered throughout the city. There is an incredible array of activities to choose from! All you need to do is register, and your child can attend up to two sessions. Get all the information (and learn the difference between aikido and judo, and floorball and futsal) here.

Tomorrow is our last day of Outdoor Education at Bowness Park with all the Grade 5/6 classes! Please make sure that your child packs a cold lunch and a water bottle, and is dressed for the weather, including shoes suitable for walking and running.
Also tomorrow (evening) is the School Council Family Dance--there's a reminder about it in your child's backpack. Tickets are available at the door if you didn't preorder--remember that all kids must be accompanied by an adult.
Check your email for an important message about end-of-year events...thanks!

The students did a great job performing for each other this morning, and for the Div I students and staff this afternoon...third time will be the charm, I'm sure! Please remember that doors open at 6:30, and students should be dropped off to me here in Room 10 by 6:40. They will stay here with me for the duration of the concert, when they are not performing. You will also pick them up from the classroom at the end (8pm), after everyone leaves the gym. Don't forget the jazzy outfits (those who didn't leave their ties in their desks)!
Tomorrow: Spirit Day (Crazy Hair / Blast from the Past), final ROARS assembly, Spelling test...then no school until Tuesday!
Tomorrow is also your last chance to return the order form & payment if your family wants to attend the School Council Family Dance.

I get the feeling that Mrs. DiMarino would like me to shout this one from the rooftops:
TOMORROW IS SPRING CONCERT DAY: PLEASE SEND YOUR CHILD TO SCHOOL IN ALL BLACK WITH A TIE! The afternoon assembly is from 1:00 to 2:00pm (parents unable to come to the evening concert are welcome to attend), and the evening performance is from 7:00 to 8:00pm. IN THE EVENING, SCHOOL DOORS WILL OPEN AT 6:30, AND STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO REPORT TO THEIR CLASSROOMS AT 6:40, SO THE PERFORMANCE CAN START ON TIME. Thanks!
And a special message from Mr. Kearney, who's also pretty worked up about things right now:
Run Bowness is coming up (June 5th) and Bel Park is trying to defend its crown (four years and running!). For those that don’t know, Cadence Café hands out a $500 prize to the Bowness school with the most runners. Currently Bowness High has 29 runners signed up, and Bel Park sits at 18. Let’s crush them!
You can sign up for Run Bowness here...there's a 10K run (that I'll be doing again!), a 5K run/walk, and about a 2K "kids' mile" race.
Also: if your kids need some help "training" for the run (or just want to play some running games and have some fun!), Mr. K and I have just decided to host a Running Club again this year, on Mondays and Wednesdays at lunch (11:30-11:55), for the next few weeks. All kids are welcome to attend--those who usually go home for lunch will need to bring a lunch, and will be invited to eat in lunch room with the other kids after we run. We're starting it up tomorrow, but it's a drop-in club, so no worries if you can't make it til next week.

A new Math P.O.W. has been sent home for homework (on green paper).
After this Wednesday's Concert day (costume: all black with a tie), will be Thursday's Spirit Day (costume: retro outfit and/or crazy hair).
If there are students (Student Council or otherwise) who'd like to help explain and advertise our last Spirit Day of the year tomorrow, those students need to bring their retro clothes/accessories (or their crazy hair ideas!) tomorrow please.
Finally: we planted our corn, beans, and squash (the three sisters) in our garden plot today, along with three rows of onions. Thanks to amazing BelPark volunteers Leanne and Carrie for supporting the students...and to all those volunteers who recently gave up part of their weekend to build the boxes! Check out the Showcase page for a few photos.

Please see new Spelling words for next Thursday's test (there is no school next Friday or the following Monday).
And one more tiny note going home about the Concert (informing you that doors open at 6:30 that evening, and students are expected in their classrooms at 6:40).
There is also a letter describing our upcoming walking field trip to Bowness Park on May 25 (no cost or consent forms).
Happy Friday the 13th!

The students created some gorgeous prints with the artist this morning! (And, as it happened, I was the only one snapping photos, so the Media Consent wasn't applicable.)
Yet another tiny note coming your way, this time from our Music teacher: the kids are expected to wear all black, with a colourful tie, for next Wednesday's performances (afternoon assembly and evening concert). Thanks!

Tomorrow is the last chance to bring in your Consent for Specific Media form, if you approve of (potentially) having your child's photograph used by the Art Program we'll be working with tomorrow morning.
Coming home today: an invitation (and order form) to the BelPark Family Dance that our School Council is holding on May 25, and a brochure from Child Safe Canada.
And this just in: a bright orange (coral? salmon?) note from our very own Room 10 volunteer extraordinaire Joleen Schneider...we need just a few more casino volunteers in order to run an event that raises enormous amounts of money for our school. Please consider helping out if you have time to spare; you don't need your security clearance to volunteer for that event, nor do you need any prior knowledge or experience about casinos. And you may just find that it's the most fun volunteer experience you've ever had--my husband had a great time helping out at our son's school casino! Thanks in advance. :)

There are three notices coming home today...
The white sheet is a Consent Form for a specific media event: we'll be working with an artist on Thursday morning, making some group prints inspired by our time at City Hall School. The artist (Carole Bondaroff) works with the AFA Travelling Exhibition (TREX) Program, and there will be a photographer present, gathering documentation for the program. If you consent to your child possibly being in a photo used by that agency, please return the bottom of the sheet.
The yellow sheet is a reminder about next week's Spring Concert from our Music teacher. If your child will not be present that evening, please return the slip so Mrs. DiMarino can ensure that she has all the parts covered for each song.
The pink sheet is this week's Math Problem, due next Monday.
Thanks!
P.S. There is one more (white) letter going home with each family today, about a tragic loss to a family that has long been part of our BelPark community...I have discussed the incident with the class, and will send out a parent email now about it too.

Apologies for the late post; a full week at City Hall School was rather exhausting! I'm tired--in the best possible way. There's a synopsis and a photo slideshow on the Showcase page again.
Also: Happy Mothers' Day tomorrow! *Most* of the children remembered to take home their paintings of Stephen Ave, as their gift to you...because nothing says, "I love you, Mom!" like historic architecture. :)

Last day of City Hall School tomorrow...and the weather forecast looks better than today's, but please remember to send enough layers to keep your child warm and dry if things take a turn for the worse! We will, as always, spend lots of time outside, and have a really fun day planned to culminate our week. See the Showcase page for today's highlights. |
May the fourth be with you!
Check out the Showcase page once again, for a glimpse at our third day of City Hall School... And I'd like to send a shout-out to Frank, a parent in our class who works in the Faculty of Environmental Design (the same faculty where another of our parents, who has supported our work on the Bowness project, is a professor). Yesterday, Frank took the time to tour me and my preschooler around the department, where I took countless photos of amazing machines and intricate models, to inspire our own model-making that we'll be doing in class soon. But he offered more than inspiration: check out this heap of scrap building materials, now stored in our "canoe"...literally a boatload of supplies! Really excited for the students to get their hands on more exciting materials than yogurt cups and shoeboxes. I think their final projects will surpass your expectations. (Frank/Dave: please let me know if and when there's more stuff to pick up...thanks!) |

Apologies for the late post--it's hectic being a soccer mom! Highlights of Day 2 at CHS are on the Showcase page...
We also visited the Craft Fair briefly this morning, before boarding the bus. A number of students expressed interest in buying some items (and a few even put things "on hold")...please remind them to bring their payments for those items within the next day or two. Thanks!

Please check your child's backpack (or your email!) for an update on City Hall School, which is all next week!
Thus no new Spelling or Math for now.
And, if I don't remember to update this next week, I'll share now the link that Jody has provided in this week's City Hall School news: a website that lists all the "Jane's Walks" that are happening in various neighbourhoods next weekend (not this weekend!)...there's a little box on the site that you can scroll through to see them all. I think I know what my family will be doing that day!
Oh, I forgot...One more thing! I will see you at Young Writers' Conference tomorrow, Sanya and Amelia. :)

Spelling Test tomorrow. Also: those students who made things for our Craft Fair, which is happening all next week (unfortunately while we are away!), need to bring those items to their partners from other classes who have agreed to sell them on their behalf. I will request that our class have the opportunity to see (and, if so desired, purchase) some of the crafts one morning before we need to board the bus. Thank you for all your efforts to raise money for those less fortunate!

Special Message regarding the upcoming Spring Concert on May 18:
Students in grades 3-6 are looking forward to performing in our upcoming spring concert! Here are a few important informational items…
- There is no specific dress required for students.
- The school doors will open at 6:30pm. Students should arrive in their classrooms at 6:40pm. (The concert is 7-8pm.)
- In all of these performances, individual students play very important roles and in some cases, a student may be the only one playing a specific instrument. If you know ahead of time that your child will NOT be attending the evening performance on May 18th, PLEASE let Ms. DiMarino know so that she can ensure all of our parts are covered for the concert.
- Seven classrooms of students will be performing. The gymnasium is only able to accommodate a few guests per student. An afternoon school assembly will take place at 1:00pm for extended family members who wish to view the performances.

Coming home today: new Math POW, marked Spelling tests, and notices about a survey on children's physical activity--though the BOKS fitness program is referenced in the note, all families are invited to participate in the survey (whether or not their children have participated in BOKS this year).
Some students are also bringing home new forms for City Hall School; please return all forms and payment tomorrow! Many thanks to those who submitted everything on time.
Finally: May events have now been added to the Important Dates page, so please mark your calendars.

Because Friday April 22 and Monday April 25 are both PD days, our Spelling tests will be tomorrow.
Tomorrow is also Pizza Day, for those students who ordered. Everyone still needs to bring a recess snack.
Finally, because tomorrow is our last school day before Earth Day (which is on Friday, or--as I like to call it--Mrs. Bodner's Birthday Eve), there will be a school-wide field clean-up tomorrow afternoon. Nothing potentially harmful will be left to the children to pick up, but if your child would rather not pick up any garbage with their bare hands, please consider sending gardening gloves (or similar), rather than disposable latex gloves. We want to clear away the waste, not add to it unnecessarily! (And gardening gloves would be particularly appropriate, since we'll be planting some seeds after that with one of our wonderful School Garden parent volunteers...)

What a busy couple of days! My apologies for the late update...the new Math P.O.W. was sent home yesterday, and is due next Tuesday (as there is no school Monday). And as I wrote below, City Hall School forms and payments were due yesterday, so I need those as soon as possible please. Email me with any questions or concerns ([email protected]).
Thank you once again to our amazing group of parent volunteers for helping us do some incredible, innovative work. Our Building Community project has recently taken on another dimension, as the students have surveyed people to gain another perspective on their plans. After dismissal yesterday, some of the kids who would usually be in after-school care walked with me to Bow Centre Place, the retirement home which is located in the area that we are "redeveloping". The students did a wonderful job interviewing the seniors there, who absolutely adored them. Check out the Showcase page for some photos of our adventure (the kids earned their treats!). And of course our film project on Canadian history is progressing now at an exciting rate. We obtained some terrific footage today at Bowness Park. I can't wait to share the finished product with our school community, and all of you.

See new Spelling words for next Thursday's test (there is no school Friday, April 22 or Monday, April 25).
I still haven't received City Hall School forms and payments from a number of students...please remember that the due date for those is Monday. If you require some financial assistance, please just send me an email confirming that, and pay what you can. (If you require a bit extra time to gather the funds, please send in the consent form on Monday, and an email clarifying when you would be sending in the payment--whether partial or full. I need to have the finances in order prior to our week there in May.) Thanks so much!

Tomorrow is Twin/Triplet Day...don't forget to be all matchy-matchy with someone (even if it's just a similar hat or the same-coloured shirt). Have fun with it! (I know I will...)
Tomorrow is also our Spelling test.
And keep those button-up shirts, vests, ties, hats, and long dresses coming! Huge thanks to those of you who've already lent us some wonderful things--we're almost ready to start filming! (And, yes, you have my permission to bring in fake weapons...we also need some hammers for our railway workers and a sword, if we can get it, for Jacques Cartier. Plus, we have a couple redcoats to dress, so please send in anything long-sleeved that's solid red--even if it's inside out. Also a bathrobe/housecoat, and a pocket watch. Thanks!)

The students are getting feedback on their ideas for our City Planning project. Though some of their ideas are still a bit outlandish, they've been working hard developing surveys so they can ask other citizens what they think. Yesterday, they surveyed students in Grades 1-6. Today, they created online surveys so they can ask you (and your spouse, your neighbours, your friends...) what you think.
Please allow your child to sign in to their google account (google "google" to get there!). All the students emailed their surveys to themselves. Once they go into their email account, they can click on the link, and then let you submit your answers. There is no limit to how many responses may be submitted per link, so everyone in the house can give it a try.
If your child has trouble remembering his or her cbe email account, it is always: first name, initial, number (this they need to know!), then @educbe.ca (example: if I were a student, and I was the 6th Erin B. registered in the CBE, my email would be [email protected]).
Thanks for your support of our learning!

There is a flyer going home today about the Summer Camp programs offered by Kids Love Bowness childcare.
Please send costumes and props in labeled bags if you can (or I will label them as they come in with masking tape)...better yet, put your initials on the tags if there are some. Thank you for contributing! We now have a "green screen" set up to add special effects to some of our scenes--a number of your children are very good at ironing, should you need some extra help with that chore in the near future. :)
This Friday is Twin (or Triplet!) Day, so please encourage your child to participate by getting together with a friend (or two) and wearing similar outfits/hairstyles that day.

See new Math POW, and...
Call for Costumes!
We're nearly ready to start making our movie, and we'd like to rehearse our scenes in costume before filming begins, so we need outfits brought to school soon, in separate bags, that we can keep on hand for awhile. We've already gathered a few things that some of the students can use, such as bow ties, suspenders, toy weapons, railway spikes, and even some fake moustaches! But we need a bunch more items (such as long dresses or skirts, an apron and bonnet, button-up shirts, ties, suit jackets, and hats for both men and women). We would also like some old-fashioned snowshoes and a pocket watch, if at all possible! Please start by checking your house (and perhaps your friends' and neighbours' houses)...if those searches don't work out, I'd recommend thrift stores such as Value Village or Once Upon A Child. Please don't spend a lot on this--but, if you do, feel free to send me your receipt, and I will reimburse you. Thanks so much for your support of our learning. (If you happen to have a bunch of stuff on hand, please consider sending in more than just enough for your own child. I assure you that everything will be returned in good condition.)
For more specific inspiration, you could do some google image searches of the characters listed below, and/or check out the links to the Heritage Minute video clips that we used in our research...
Scene 1: Jacques Cartier, a French missionary, and another French explorer meet Chief Donnacona and another Iroquois person in 1534. See the Jacques Cartier video.
Scene 2: Laura Secord warns Captain Fitzgibbon during the War of 1812...here is the clip.
Scene 3: The Road to Confederation...please see clips of Sir John A. Macdonald and Sir George-Etienne Cartier, and google Louis Riel.
Scene 4: Chinese rail workers complete the Canadian Pacific Railway.
Scene 5: The Famous Five fight for women's rights, led by Emily Murphy and Nellie McClung.
And Scene 6 is Juno Beach, so you can just google images of Canadian soldiers in World War II.
(Bonus points if you can put together a moose costume for our finale...)

See new Spelling words for next Friday's test, and remember that the Math POW is due Monday.
Some students (those with lots of lines) are also bringing home scripts to practice (not necessarily memorize) their lines for our movie.
If your child is lucky enough to be performing in a language other than English (this is Canada, after all!), please help him or her as much as you are able. The Mandarin and Mohawk lines are as phonetic as I can get them, while respecting the original language (that I don't speak myself)...please just sound them out with your child. The French, if you're not familiar with it yourself, I can write out for you phonetically if need be--just let me know! Thank you, merci, xiexie, & nia:wen! :)
P.S. Next Friday is a Spirit Day: Twin (or Triplet!) Day, when students are invited to dress, style their hair, etc., in the same way as a friend. If my members of Student Council (ie., Wesley and Milo) would like to help promote that day next week, they each need to have a twin picked out (from whichever class they choose), and bring a matching outfit on Monday or Tuesday so they and their twins can go around to the other classes and advertise. Thanks!

Today we began our work with Tracy Franks, an artist-in-residence who is working with the younger students on Kandinsky-inspired "welcome" signs for the exterior of our school, and with the older students (like our class) on fabric banners for the interior, that celebrate aspects of the beautiful natural surroundings here in Bowness.
Also: if you're interested in learning a bit more about Campus Calgary/Open Minds (the program that includes City Hall School as one of its sites), here is a clip about the program that just ran on Global News...Mayor Nenshi has declared April 4-8 CC/OM Week!

Your child should be bringing home a notice about our upcoming session of BOKS fitness (the last one of the year).
Check out the Showcase page for some photos of our walking trip last Friday, and the journaling we did (both on site and back at school).
The students have been experimenting with filming techniques and editing tricks in iMovie today, in preparation for our upcoming film project...we have some budding Scorseses (and at least one Romero) in the class!

Three things coming home, all equally exciting: our class photo, our City Hall School forms, and our next Math problem (okay, maybe some are more exciting than others).
Last Friday's walking trip to our Bowness project site was a nice trial run for City Hall School. The kids (and adults!) did some great journalling, and our sharing conversation this morning was really rich and inspiring.
On the other hand, many of your children spent part of that afternoon hungry, thirsty, tired, and hot. (And a few of us wound up with a bit of a sunburn...) City Hall School is not for the weak! ;) Please ensure, on a daily basis but especially when it's hot weather and/or we'll be off-site, that your kids come to school with lots of healthy food (and/or that they remember to access the Food for Thought bins), and a reusable water bottle. Also: sunscreen!
The letter about City Hall School is yours to keep (the white page)...everything in blue needs to be completed and returned.
So please bring back the blue by Monday, April 18. Thanks!

Reminder: tomorrow afternoon is our walking field trip in Bowness, from 12:30 to 2:45. Kids need to be dressed for spending the whole afternoon outside, and for walking to and from our project site.
Some students (who have lots of lines in our upcoming Canadian history movie) might be bringing home scripts to practice their lines at home. Please feel free to help them rehearse, but remember that they don't necessarily need to memorize every line, especially longer speeches, because it's a film, not a play...some of them can read from off-camera scripts when we film it. That said, the better they know the parts, the more convincing their acting will be! Also: now would be a great time to check attics and closets for outfits and props that could help your child put a costume together. If you have lots of such items, please let me know, as we'd love to borrow as much as we can! Thanks so much...

We did it! We made it to Spring Break! Thanks so much for the time you spent at conferences...these kids have definitely all earned a break, none more so than the ones in my Dance Club who've been giving it their all during lunch hours to learn our routine for the assembly yesterday. Thanks so much for the time you spent at conferences...these kids have definitely all earned a break, none more so than the ones in my Dance Club who've been giving it their all during lunch hours to learn our routine for the assembly yesterday. Check out the Showcase page for two different video clips of their rehearsals (with and without the mascot as a dancer)!

Happy St. Patrick's Day...and Happy Spring Break!
Student-Led Conferences are tonight until 8pm, and tomorrow between 8am and 1pm. Please feel free to show up at any point during the hour you have reserved. There's no set time really, and it won't take you an hour.
Remember to take home all the work on your child's desk, and do some goal-setting in his or her progress journal before you leave.
Then, enjoy a fun and relaxing week...see you back at school for our return to classes on Tuesday, March 29th.
*One more thing: I have very few consent forms & payments returned for our Easter egg in-school field trip in April...please return those as soon as possible (or indicate if you do not want your child to participate). If payment is an issue, let me know. Thanks!

Tomorrow is our ROARS assembly at 12:45 parents are welcome. It's also St patrick's day so wear green. But if you are in dance club, wear all black in the afternoon, because our performance is at about 1:00 (during the assembly). Pictures are here.
Conferences are tomorrow evening and Friday, so no school Friday!

See blindingly bright notice about an upcoming in-school "field trip" for the Grade 3/4 and 4/5 classes. The students will be learning how to make traditional Ukrainian Easter eggs (after Spring Break...after Easter, as it happens!). There is a $6 cost to cover the materials and the artist booking, and we need some parent volunteers to support us during that time, as the activity is quite difficult--and potentially dangerous! :) The notice has a tear-off consent form to return with your payment, and you can indicate your availability to volunteer on there--or simply by emailing me. Thanks.
Also: there is a Parent Council meeting tonight, for anyone interested. There was a note that went home about this too, but I can still see some of them in student mailboxes! The meeting is from 7pm to 8:30, in the Learning Commons (the room formerly known as the school library).
Finally: please book a time for student-led conferences, either online or by calling the school office: 403-777-6010.

Happy Pi Day! Your children did a great job today, helping to make both pumpkin and apple pies (the first taste of pie for a number of the students!). If they remembered to bring it home after all that sugar, they also have some "pi in the sky" art to show you. Feel like a sing-along around the dinner table tonight? Check out this link to a video of the "circle song" written by a local math teacher. Want to see the evidence of our culinary exploits? Check the Showcase page for some photos of our efforts today. Finally, a joke, from another of the clips we watched today:
What do you call a jack-o'-lantern's circumference divided by its diameter? Pumpkin pi!

There are new Spelling words for next week's test...a reminder that the test will be Thursday, as there is no school on Friday due to Student-Led Conferences.
Please also check your child's backpack for some music from Mrs. DiMarino for them to study.
Also: check the Showcase page for some photos of the Grade 5's trip to Safety Expo on Wednesday. (Thanks again, volunteers!)
Finally: don't forget to set your clocks forward by one hour this weekend, for Daylight Savings Time!

See notice about Transportation...this issue impacts all families whose children are students of CBE schools, even those who don't ride the bus. There is an opportunity for you to provide feedback to the school board on this issue.
Tomorrow is an Early Dismissal day (11:15), and our next Spelling test: see the word lists on this site if your child has lost the paper copy.

We had a great day, the Grade 5s attending Safety Expo and the Grade 4s helping out the younger students here at BelPark! No matter what grade you're in, kids, please complete the important homework assignment of making (or reviewing) your family's Emergency Escape Plan in case of fire...and test your smoke alarms while you're at it.
Tomorrow morning is the "bring a guest" session of BOKS fitness, 7:30-8:15. Come out and prove that you're in waaaay better shape than I am. The winter session wraps up next week, but there will be a spring session upcoming, so this is a great chance to check out the program if you're considering signing up then. It's completely free, and lots of fun! You'll likely come to class *less* tired on a BOKS day, despite the early arrival, because you'll feel so energized.
Finally: Student-Led Conferences are Thursday and Friday of next week. Thank you to those families who have already signed up. If you haven't, please go online to Conference Manager, or call the school office, to reserve a time for your family (including your child!) to attend. Thanks!

See newsletter for this month (March events are also posted on the Important Dates page of this site), and green note about the School Council's upcoming Bottle Drive.
Grade 5:
Tomorrow is our field trip to Safety Expo, in and around the Municipal Building, downtown. We will leave BelPark at 9am, and return to the school at approximately 2:30. While downtown, students will be attending sessions on Fire Safety and Online Safety, as well as visiting the booths that are on display in the common areas. We will also, of course, be eating downtown, so all students must bring a bag lunch (nothing that requires heat or hot water), as well as dressing for the weather, since we'll be walking between destinations. There will not be an opportunity to buy food or drink, so please don't bring money...just lunch, snacks, and a drink!
Grade 4:
Tomorrow is your chance to be buddy leaders for the day! Except for the beginning and end of the day, and the block of time that you spend working on Science projects with Mr. K's class, you will be assigned to a Kindergarten or Grade 1/2 classroom to help out for the day. Your lunch hour will be as usual, so you do not need to bring a lunch if you usually go home at that time.

Mar. 5: Special Dance Club Message! (Hi, Dance Crew!)
Because I have arranged to have our next ROARS Assembly on March 17 instead of April 1, we will be able to perform for the school on March 17 (*before* Spring Break), and will thus practice more frequently until then: every day you are able to, please join us in the gym for at least the first 15 minutes of Lunch so we can run through the routine a couple times. (I will be there every day, and you should come at least 3 times a week from now on.) If you would like to practice at home as well, here is a link to the instruction video with music. Remember to stop following the instructor at the 2:28 mark, when we will begin our "solos". Finally, remember to begin the hunt for your performance outfit: black clothing, with a baseball cap. Or as close to that as you can beg, borrow, or steal...no, wait--don't steal! Just try begging or borrowing. ;)

Book orders are due next Tuesday (cheque or online payment please).
Next Tuesday is also Spring Photo Day, when another individual photo, along with a class photo, will be taken. Maybe a good weekend for a haircut? ;)

Once again, a few Gr. 5s need to hand in their consent forms to attend the (completely free!) field trip to the Safety Expo next Wednesday...I need them by Monday at the absolute latest (or those students will remain at school that day, being buddy leaders in the K/1/2 classes along with the Gr. 4 students).

See new Spelling words for next Friday's test...
It has *just* become possible for my Grade 5s to join the 5/6 classes on an upcoming field trip to the Safety Expo, downtown on Wednesday, March 9. There is no cost for this trip, and I have already secured volunteers. Another teacher kindly made copies for me this morning of the consent forms and the parent letter...she added my name at the bottom, but didn't change the dates. It says to return the forms by...er...yesterday! As time travel is not yet a feasible option, please return the forms as soon as possible. Thanks!
Grade 4s: Have no fear! March 9 will be a fun day for you too, as you'll get to spend all day being buddy helpers in a Kindergarten or Grade 1/2 class...you will have a great time, and experience a wonderful leadership opportunity. :)
Finally:
1) Royal Oak/Rocky Ridge students have a notice that needs to be completed and returned,
2) some students have a note from the Music teacher about purchasing a recorder,
3) and some more students have their tax receipts going home today (for noon supervision).

Another great day on the slopes...thanks again to our parent volunteers!
A reminder that tomorrow is Pizza Lunch, so those students that ordered a meal just need to bring a snack for morning recess.
Tomorrow is also Pink Shirt Day, when everyone is encouraged to take a stand against bullying by wearing something pink (or, if you don't have pink, a similar colour like red or purple).

The kids had a good first day of ski/snowboard lessons...tomorrow is "second verse: same as the first"! Please remind them to dress in layers, with water-resistant mitts, and to wear long socks so the boots will be more comfortable. (By the way, there was a pair of ski boots sitting outside our classroom all day--that no one seemed to miss!--plus some mitts and things in the lodge area at the end of the day...any students missing items will be invited to check their Lost and Found first thing tomorrow, and to borrow some mitts from WinSport if need be.)
Also: check your child's backpack for the new Math P.O.W., due next Monday.

See new Spelling words and marked work: recent Spelling tests and older Math P.O.W. problems. I am still hoarding more recent Math problems and other work for assessment/conference purposes--thanks for your patience! (There will be conferences next Month, Student-Led Conferences rather than traditional Learning Conferences, but there will still be an opportunity to touch base with me about your child's ongoing progress since Report Cards went home. Those will occur just prior to March Break, and more information will be sent home soon.)
Reminder: Monday and Tuesday are ski/snowboard lessons at WinSport! Please ensure your child brings a cold bagged lunch, snacks, and water bottle, and remind him or her to dress appropriately. Only boots and helmets, for those kids who want to wear their own, will be permitted on the bus due to space constraints. All other equipment will be rented at the hill.
Finally: some students have a note about Change for Change fundraising (the craft sale).

Welcome back! There is a new Math P.O.W. that is due next Monday. Pizza orders are due Thursday.
On Friday, there are three things happening:
1) Fabulous Fan Friday (Spirit Day)...show off whatever you're a fan of: a team, a singer, a movie, a colour, a teacher. ;) Have fun with it!
2) Spelling Test (see Spelling page of this site if your word list got lost)
3) Math Quiz on Division:
For Grade 4: the questions will test your knowledge of basic facts up to 9x9 (ie., up to 81 divided by 9). You will be able to use objects and/or draw pictures if you do not yet have your times tables memorized...but please work on them this week!
For Grade 5: you will need to estimate and answer each question (3-digit numbers divided by 1-digit numbers), and show your work for both processes (just as we did in class today). Example: 627 divided by 7. Estimate: 627 is close to 630, so do 630 divided by 7...and I know that 63 divided by 7 is 9, so 630 divided by 7 must be 90. Then do the actual math, showing your work again (whether you use classic long division or some other method).

Congratulations to those Room 10 kids who participated in Floor Hockey Intramurals this year--it came down to an exciting shoot-out! And, speaking of hockey, huge thanks to Ava who will be letting me wear her dad's Oilers jersey at the Gr. 6 vs. Teachers game on Wednesday! :)

One last thing: I have updated the Important Dates page with February events, and the Showcase page with snowshoeing photos.

Tomorrow: Early Dismissal, Spelling Test, Report Cards home. Book orders: due next Friday. Young Writers' Conference: Tomorrow notes will go home regarding the Young Writers' Conference, happening this year on Saturday, April 30. A limited number of spots is available, so at this time we are thinking it will be (mostly?) a Grade 5/6 opportunity, but please check out their website if you'd like to know more about it. In tomorrow's note, students will be asked to look at sessions over the weekend so they are ready to share their preferences with us bright and early Tuesday morning, when we attempt to line up first choices for those lucky kids! Research opportunity: If you're interested in learning more about your child's academic strengths through participating in an *unofficial* set of psychological educational assessments, please see the note below...graduate students in the clinical psychology program at the University of Calgary are looking for young people to act as "guinea pigs" so they can learn to administer such tests. SEEKING CHILD VOLUNTEERS FOR PSYCHOLOGY 673 AT THE UNIVERSITY OF CALGARY (Psychological Assessment of Children) Graduate clinical psychology students are looking for volunteers 6-18 years of age to help gain mastery in the administration of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-V) and the Wechsler Individual Achievement Test (WIAT-III). The purpose of their assignment is to learn to administer, score, and interpret these measures. Students will administer the tests in approximately 3-6 hours, at a time deemed convenient for the child/family. Assessments would take place the week of February 8th (children ages 12-18; WISC-V only) and March 14th (children ages 6-11; WISC/WIAT) in the Psychology Department at the University of Calgary. Brief written feedback on children’s strength and weaknesses on the WISC-V and WIAT-III will be provided. If you think your child would be interested in volunteering for this endeavour, please email the course instructor (Dr. Sheri Madigan) at [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> prior to Tuesday February 2nd. Jan. 27
We had a wonderful time reading in our pyjamas for Family Literacy Day! I already submitted a group entry for our class on the Calgary Public Library "Read For 15" page, in an effort to make Calgary the most "readerly" city in Alberta...please do read as a family tonight (and every night!), and then you might want to enter as a family as well, using this link. |

Sorry...we keep forgetting to update the blog this week! Yesterday, the kids should have brought home their new Math P.O.W. (and a note about measles). By now(ish), the Grade 5s should have brought home their constellation finders (described below). If the clouds disperse, please head out with them and check out the stars...and--starting tomorrow morning--a whole bunch of planets!
About an hour before dawn, for the next few weeks, five planets will be visible in an arc across the sky. Check out this link for more info! (The only thing more spectacular up there is of course the new David Bowie constellation...)

See new spelling words for next Friday's test. (And a reminder that Math P.O.W. is due on Monday.) Great job dancing today!
Our Outdoor Education specialist had to cancel this afternoon, so we will reschedule cross-country skiing (just in the back field) with him for another day...luckily, our school has our own snowshoes, so we had some winter fun on our own this afternoon!
Science: Grade 4: Bring any extra materials you need for making your musical instrument on Monday please.
Grade 5: Show your parents your constellation finder. On a clear night, try it out: rotate the star map until the correct date is lined up with the hour of observation. Then hold the finder with the north arrow pointing north. The star map will help you to identify which constellations will be directly overhead, and which will be closer to the horizon in each direction. See how many you can identify! I look forward to hearing about your discoveries...

One more thing happening on Friday: short math quiz on multiplication.
For Grade 4s: multiplication facts up to 9 x 9, but it will not be timed like the Multisaurus tests. You'll have as much time as you need, and can use any materials/methods you like to find the answers.
For Grade 5s: 1- and 2-digit numbers by 2-digit numbers (eg. 3 x 18, 14 x 25). You may use whichever method(s) you like to find the answer, and may have as much time/materials as you need. You will need to show your work, so please write/draw/describe what you're doing if you're used to solving these in your head.
Also on Friday: Spelling test, 8:30 ROARS assembly (where we'll perform the Bollywood dance), and book orders due.
Also, please see 3 notes in message folder: new POW (due Monday), ski letter, and BOKS note.
The ski letter and BOKS note are also due back this Friday, Jan. 15th...it's a busy day!

Welcome back! The Important Dates page has been updated with January events.
Please check the Message Folder today, for: this week's Math Problem of the Week, marked P.O.W.s from prior weeks (if there aren't three of them there, your child hasn't always been submitting homework!), and a Conference Summary/Goal-Setting page from November conferences. For most students, those Goal-Setting pages are photocopies of the goals that we did together during Conferences; the photocopy is for you to keep at home. For some students, who either didn't attend Conferences or took their sheet home and never brought it back, the goal-setting sections are for you to complete at home with your child (please do one academic goal and one behavioural one), and return to me as soon as possible. Thank you!
One more thing: for Science, please send in at your earliest convenience:
Grade 4s: any extra materials needed to make the musical instrument your child has chosen to create (a simple instrument from India, Ukraine, Tunisia, or Peru...your child should have a wish-list in mind of materials needed to make a simple version).
Grade 5s: a cereal box (or similar) to make a constellation finder (plus the moon phase homework from December if it hasn't been handed in yet).

We made it! Thanks to all for a tremendous four months of learning! I've updated the Showcase page with photos of our gingerbread creations. You may also be interested in a TV news segment about how Bel-Park is preparing for the new LEAD classes that will be upstairs in January for some of the Syrian refugee children who are settling in Calgary: here is the link. I wish you all the very best of the season...and we'll pick up where we left off on January 4th. Happy holidays!

We had an amazing day of working on our Bowness mapping/planning project and our gingerbread city halls...thanks again to those parent volunteers who helped with both projects. I will post the photos of the gingerbread masterpieces on Thursday...before they're obliterated!
Just a reminder that this Thursday is the last school day of 2015...so our Student Council has planned a spirit day entitled "Farewell Funky 'Fifteen". The kids (and teachers!) are free to wear whatever festive attire they like on that day (eg. Santa hats, garland necklaces, elf costumes, dreidel earrings, New Year's Eve party dresses, snowman pyjamas...). It's a non-denominational excuse to dress up and have a good time before Winter Break arrives. :)

My apologies for a few days of no updates! We've wrapped up our weekly routines for this month: there is no spelling test this week, and I'm not sending home a new Math problem today, but please ensure that any homework that hasn't made its way onto my desk is handed in this week please.
Our gingerbread architecture is coming along really well--thank you to our parent volunteers for helping out! We'll be assembling and decorating our masterpieces tomorrow, so please send any candy that your child wants to use. You don't need to send icing, as we'll be making that from scratch as well.
Please see the Music Update below for times of caroling assemblies, if you're interested, and remember that Friday is a non-instructional day, so Winter Break (for the kids, anyway!) starts on Thursday at 2:58 sharp. :)
Also: see blue notice about a special session of BOKS fitness tomorrow morning, featuring two members of the Calgary Stampeders football team. All students are welcome to attend, whether they regularly participate in BOKS or not, and they are encouraged to wear Stamps stuff (or just red & black).

+ spelling test tomorrow.
Also: in our discussions of citizenship and current affairs, students have expressed a desire to help those less fortunate. They have brainstormed ideas about care packages for families in need, and the possibility of making "Welcome to Canada" bracelets (along with care packages) for Syrian refugees...we are putting those ideas on hold for now, but there are a couple of initiatives going on at Bel-Park currently that you are welcome to support if you are able to:
1) Mayor's Food Drive to support the Calgary Inter-Faith Food Bank, until December 16th. Click here for an update on our Admin blog about it.
2) Stuff a Backpack Initiative to support the Mustard Seed Foundation, until December 11th. Our good friends in Room 11 have spearheaded this fundraising project--if you are able to help, please see their letter below that describes some of the items needed most.
Thank you so much for any and all support!

Today we had a guest presentation from the Circle of Nations museum it was awesome
Zach :)
Also: we will be making salt dough relief models of the countries we're studying tomorrow morning. I have some flour and salt stockpiled here already, but if you're able, please send your child with a batch (or two!) of dough tomorrow, in a plastic container or large ziplock bag. It's like home-made play dough with salt, so it dries nice and hard once it's left out for a few days. The recipe is very simple...and very fun! If you have flour, water, and a fair bit of salt, please ask your child to follow the instructions on this link. Thank you!

I am impatiently waiting for Google Drive to process the video I've uploaded of our shadow play at today's Remembrance Day assembly. As I said to the students, watching them perform this incredibly moving production was the proudest moment I have experienced in my decade of teaching. They really were brilliant, and I thank you for supporting them from home with learning the poem they recited afterwards, which was also performed very well. I would also like to send a special thank you to those parents who helped us with props, costumes, and rehearsals. I have never taken on such a project before, and I couldn't have done it without your help. The video is to come!
Reminder that there is no school tomorrow; please check your child's message folder (or that of a younger sibling) for an important three-page notice: three separate letters from the principal about 1) the upcoming lockdown drill, 2) an update on school funding/staffing, and 3) the Learning Conferences that are taking place next week...
Conference booking opens tomorrow morning. Also: Photo orders are due Thursday (Retake Day is on Tuesday).

Happy Snowvember! Please make sure that your children are dressed for the weather...students are sent outside unless it's -20 or a full-blown blizzard. :)
Remembrance Day: Our shadow play rehearsals for the assembly on Nov. 10 are going brilliantly (if I do say so myself). After the play, the students will recite "In Flanders Fields"...please find the poem in your child's Message Folder (let me know if it got lost!), and help him or her practice it each night. We have marked it up with some symbols that should help them perform it in unison effectively.
Math Update: I spoke too soon! We will no longer be switching classes for Math, so both grades will stay with me for Math from now on. On Thursday, we will have a short, simple quiz (a separate one for each grade) on Patterns and Equations. Grade 5s can go over their marked booklets with you to prepare (the Equations one is coming home today), but the quiz will not have much reading/writing, or any word problems. (For those students who speak English as their first language, weekly problem-solving questions will soon become part of the homework routine.) Grade 4s can simply practice continuing basic number patterns (such as 3, 6, 9, 12...which three numbers come next?), writing pattern rules (such as "Start at 3 and add 3 each time"), and doing fill-in-the-blank equations. Examples: 23 + ___ = 57, or ___ x 6 = 48.
Candy: Those students who went trick-or-treating (and still have a bunch of candy!) have been asked to sort and count their candy for homework (for some upcoming work on fractions and decimals). Those who did not will be sorting and counting something else (eg. Lego, Pokemon cards, etc.). My apologies if you were hoping it could stay out of sight, out of mind for awhile... ;)

We were having too much fun yesterday afternoon to update our website! The kids did a wonderful job performing at the Halloween Howl Assembly, and I hope you all have a terrific weekend. If you're not too tired from trick-or-treating (and if you're actually reading this before next week!), there's a cool opportunity at the Bowness Library on Sunday: you can meet the artists who completed the beautiful mural on the west side of the building last summer. Daniel J. Kirk and Katie Green will be there from 1:00 to 2:30.

We have a light source for our shadow play! This has pretty much been the best day ever. :)
See new spelling lists: the next test is on Thursday, as there is no school next Friday.
In other news: I finally have my updated lists of student information, including the media consent forms. If you did not return your form, your child's photo/video will not appear on this or any other school website. Thus, I am able to share with you two of our first three "star citizens", as chosen in our weekly class meetings. Congratulations on being honoured with Calgary's white hat, kids! (Aren't they cute?)

Tomorrow is Early Dismissal (11:15), and Spelling Test.
Gr. 5 Math: Review marked Pattern booklet at home with a parent. When all the Equations booklets have been handed in, marked, and returned, I will assign a date for our first quiz (on Patterns & Equations). The quiz will have examples for each type of question, and you will be able to ask me questions about the wording if English is not your first language...just focus on doing the *math* correctly! :)
Gr. 4: For updates about Math homework and quizzes, please consult Mr. Kearney's website regularly.

Ah, the unexpected benefits of being the only class in the school with Grade 5s *and* Grade 4s...not only did we get to enjoy the Three Sisters Garden Harvest Celebration yesterday, but we also got to partake in the very best parts of the Grade 3/4 Potato-palooza this afternoon: polka dancing with Mr. Kearney, and...fresh-made fries! Both equally delicious. :)
Reminder: tomorrow is Picture Day! If you haven't brought your form for that back, please do so tomorrow. (But they're not essential; students can also just tell the photographer which pose and background colour they prefer.)

Today we gathered in the gym with the 5/6 classes for squash stew, popcorn, and zucchini cake...plus games and dancing! Thanks for a fun harvest celebration, parent volunteers!
We also discussed Waste Reduction Week during our City Hall News update, and explored an ecological footprint calculator. Many of the students would like to do the more advanced quiz (we've only tried the simple version) at home...click here for the site.

More fun and excitement is planned for next week, as we have harvested the corn, beans, and squash from our Three Sisters Garden in front of the school, and (together with the Grade 5/6 classes) will be having a "Harvest Hoedown" feast and celebration on Tuesday at 2:00!

In conjunction with our Grade 4 Science work on Light & Shadows, and our Grade 5 Social Studies work on Canadian history, we are beginning to plan a shadow play to be performed at our Remembrance Day assembly on November 10, in the morning...save the date! We'd love to have you there to see it. We'd also love any help you might be able to give us, in the form of lending us props (eg. large rucksack, binoculars, crutches, and various other things the kids might mention--I'd prefer to keep weapons very simple, stylized cardboard cutout versions) or of coming in to help us prepare and rehearse in the coming weeks. Finally, we will eventually need a giant white sheet to hang from the rafters at the front of the stage--perhaps one of you has a sewing machine and the time to stitch together some old bedsheets? And it looks like we already have a couple large spotlights we can use...I just need to get past a few layers of dust to determine whether they might need some new lightbulbs or something. ;)
Thank you for your support of this project, and please contact me with any questions or concerns.

The word on the street is that the Weather School clip that ran yesterday during the noon news is better than the one from this morning. ;)
Our Terry Fox assembly and run this year was phenomenal, thanks in huge part to the kids from Rooms 10 and 11! Remember that we will continue accepting donations til Friday, in hopes of achieving our school goal, and our class goal (which is essentially just to beat Mr. Kearney's class!)...keep those toonies coming please. Thanks again!

We had a weather presentation today from meteorologist Jordan Witzel, and were also lucky enough to have BelPark parent Leslie Horton (who reports traffic alongside him in the mornings) here as well to record a segment. Watch or record Global TV (channel 7) tomorrow at 7:15am if you'd like to see the clip!
Also: Rooms 10 & 11 have put together an awesome Terry Fox assembly! All are welcome to join us for it tomorrow at 2pm in the gym...and to run with us outside at 2:30 if you like. :) We will continue accepting donations in class and online (tax-deductible!) all week...thank you for your generosity.
(Finally: I am still waiting for Student Packages to return from a few students, and for immunization info from some of our Grade 5 students for our School Nurse--she spoke to them today about the upcoming vaccination session. Thanks!)

Thank you to everyone who came to speak with me at Conferences! I'd like to clarify something about the (blue) Consent for Specific Media Coverage form for Tuesday's weather presentation: signing and returning the form indicates your consent for your child *possibly* to be on TV in the Global News segment. If you do not wish your child to be photographed or filmed, you indicate that by simply not returning the form. If that is the case, please be aware that your child will still be permitted to observe the presentation, but will not be in view of the cameras or asked to participate in question and answer sessions.
One more thing about media consent: on Monday, your child will be given a (purple) letter from Principal Rakowski about online communication. In it, he confirms that the general Consent to Post or Publish form that was sent home in the Student Package (large white envelope) at the start of the year does apply to photos on class websites such as this, in addition to CBE websites. My apologies for the confusion, as we were initially told that it does not. (There may be an additional form required for the posting of *videos* of your children on this site, which I will obtain and send home as soon as possible if required.) What this means is that your prior consent to post photos of your child (without a name attached)--if you gave it--applies to this website as well. This consent is valid for the duration of this school year, but you may withdraw your consent at any time by notifying the principal in writing.
And finally: I have now added October events to the Important Dates page, so you can mark your calendars! :)

One more thing: the 4/5 and 5/6 classes will be part of an in-school "Weather School" presentation on Tuesday, Sept. 29, featuring Global News meteorologist Jordan Witzel. The presentation will also be filmed for a segment on Global News. Thus, please return the Consent for Specific Media Coverage form that is coming home today in your child's message folder.

Beakerhead is a "smash up of art, science, and engineering" that is hosting a variety of events around Calgary Sept. 16-20...this link takes you to their homepage, which also includes information on an event especially for kids on Sept. 12 & 13 at Telus Spark Science Centre: the Calgary Mini Maker Faire. Also, in Bowness news: the Annual Bownesians' Picnic in Baker Park has been rescheduled to Sept. 20, 1-6pm...there will be food, live music, and fun for the whole family! Check out their Facebook event page.

Outdoor Education tomorrow: our first session with (CBE Specialist Teacher) Mr. Kelba! We will be out in the back field for the second half of the afternoon practicing some orienteering skills. Also: If you're interested, SUTP coupon books are for sale again this year (see envelope: one should be going home per family, so let me know if you didn't receive one). And Scholastic book orders for this class are due next Friday, Sept. 11 (please send cheques, not cash, payable to Scholastic Canada, along with the order form clearly marked with the desired items and your child's name).
Outdoor Education tomorrow: our first session with (CBE Specialist Teacher) Mr. Kelba! We will be out in the back field for the second half of the afternoon practicing some orienteering skills. The forecast calls for rain, so please dress for the weather: rain jackets and boots or sturdy outdoor shoes. Thanks!

Have you heard the news? Room 10 will be attending City Hall School this year! We will be spending all day downtown, in and around the Municipal Building, every day the week of May 2-6. Beyond that, our connection to City Hall will be a year-long one, enhancing our learning around our big idea of People, Places, and Perspectives: Building Community. Our class, and each of the Grade 5/6 classes, are part of the Campus Calgary/Open Minds program (which encompasses several sites) this year, and it is so much more than just a "field trip".
